Holidays to Bulgaria

Overview

You can enjoy holidays to Bulgaria all year round. Take in the warm temperatures, local culture, food and shopping. Bulgaria is adorned with soft green sloping mountainsides, ski resorts, quaint villages and thick lush forests.

Winter holidays in Bulgaria will no doubt entail skiing, an activity that the country is well known for. There are several excellent ski opportunities, from rugged snow capped peaks to soft inclined slopes. Bansko ski resort is surrounded by the Rhodopa, Pirin and Rila mountains. The coldest month, which is January, averages a daily temperature of just –1.9C making it a great family holiday destination for special winter celebrations, such as Christmas and New Years.

Bulgaria is also known for its all-year-round sunshine. Sun seekers will need to head to the east where they will discover the only coastline the country has. Here you will find the Black Sea with its golden beaches and warm waters. The beaches are long, inviting and safe, as the coastal tides are always calm. Better known beaches include the appropriately named Sunny Beach in the Bourgas Region and Golden Sands in the Barna Region. Both are well established and close to accommodation, resorts and entertainment, including nightclubs, cafes and hundreds of restaurants.

Sightseeing should include the beautiful town of Nessebur. This town is one of Bulgaria’s oldest settlements. This charming medieval town is adorned with spectacular architecture, which has gained it a UNESCO World Heritage status.

The towns of Bulgaria are filled with numerous museums, historical monuments, shopping plazas, outdoor activities and of course, restaurants. For several years Bulgaria has been ranked as one of the least expensive tourist destinations for travellers. With more then 230 miles of sandy beaches, 8 of which are rated Blue Flags, and an average temperature of 29°C, it is easy to see why holidays to Bulgaria are a top choice.

Weather

With more than 300 days of sunshine there really is no bad time to make Bulgaria your holiday destination. The country does enjoy four distinct seasons, all with a favourable climate rarely dipping below the freezing mark even during the coldest months of winter.

Summers are normally hot and dry, with an average a daytime temperature of 29°C. Winter will often reach freezing point, but without extremely low temperatures. The best time of year to visit will depend greatly on the reason for the trip.

Some months are ideal for bird watching while other months are perfect for skiing. Nature lovers will enjoy sun, blossoms and wildlife between May and September, while the ski season is best from December to May.

Currency

Your holidays to Bulgaria will require the local Lev. There are approximately 2.24 Lev per £1. Foreign currency can be exchanged at all the usual places such as airports, hotels and banks.
