Holidays to Prince George

The history of northern British Columbia dates back to 1807 and the North West Company’s fur trading post at Fort George. As the economy expanded with the growth of Canada’s railway system other industries flourished, particularly forestry which dominated the area throughout much of the 20th century. The oil and chemical industries have taken over in recent years, while education and the service sector play an increasingly important role in the local economy. There are plenty of venues for leisure activities, of course, and the city has much to offer in the way of culture and entertainment to both its citizens and those planning holidays to Prince George.

There are a number of historical attractions documenting the growth of the city such as the Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum and the Huble Homestead, a heritage site that shows what life in a trading post was like, and which has been restored to the way it looked in the early 1900s. Exploration Place is a good choice for families and offers a wide range of exhibitions and interactive displays, while visitors can get a flavour of the city’s past by taking the Downtown Heritage Tour.

Holidays in Prince George also have much to offer in the way of outdoor pursuits. Fishing is very popular, and there are a large number of lakes and rivers located within an hour’s drive of the city including the Nechako River and Hart Lake in Crooked River Provincial Park. The many parks surrounding the city have hiking trails available for hikers of all experience levels. The Ancient Forest to the east of the city, with its gigantic western red cedars – many of which are over 2,000 years old – is well worth a visit. Golfing holidays to Prince George are another option with plenty of good courses in the area, while for a taste of the outdoors life there are several campsites with extensive facilities located just outside the city. With a bit of luck campers might even catch a glimpse of the moose, deer and other animals that inhabit the countryside.

For a spot of retail therapy, visitors on Prince George holidays can head downtown where they will find everything from large chain outlets to quirky independent stores, which give the area a distinctive air; the area around 3rd and 4th avenues in particular is home to many smaller shops and boutiques, and is commonly referred to as ‘Specialty Avenue” by the locals. Theatres, live music venues, regular events and festivals, and a diverse range of bars, restaurants, and hotels complete the picture, making holidays in Prince George a colourful and exciting option.

The next few years will see further expansion of the city’s tourist services as Prince George prepares to host the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
