Holidays to Calgary

Overview of Calgary holidays

It is the Calgary Stampede that draws many international visitors on Calgary holidays and the July festival is seen as something of a showcase of Calgary’s special culture and warm hospitality. Held in Stampede Park in the downtown area, the Calgary Stampede is pretty much the only show in town for its 10 days of the year and the spectacle of tournament rodeo and chuck-wagon derby is a must-see event for anyone who takes holidays in Calgary at that time.

For animal lovers whose taste goes beyond the cowboy offering of the Calgary Stampede, Calgary Zoo is an easily accessible attraction that is suitable for all the family. There is a taste of the local at Calgary Zoo, with a grizzly bear encounter set in the Canadian wilderness, in case your Calgary holidays do not extend to a larger tour of the vast Canadian countryside.

Another attraction not to be missed during Calgary holidays is the large family friendly amusement park, Calaway Park, which claims to be the largest in western Canada and offers thrills and rides in what it terms a ‘playcation’. In a more sporting style, Calgary Olympic Park is open to visitors who would like to try their hand at one of the many winter sports on offer, including snowboarding and bobsleigh, on the site of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.

The Olympic ski-jump slopes are one of the things that you will see from the observation deck of Calgary Tower in the Calgary downtown area. As much as such towers have become prevalent in many cities, complete with a revolving restaurant, the view from the top is worth the climb and a good way to become orientated at the start of your Calgary holidays.

As a bustling city, Calgary also has lots more to offer to visitors in the downtown area, including a wide selection of museums and restaurants. The Glenbow Museum is highly rated and contains a good number of exhibits, with a special focus on First Nation art and its interpretations, but also with relics from around the world. For a further touch of history and culture, the Heritage Park Historical Village and Fort Calgary offer diverse and intriguing glimpses into the cultural past of Calgary and the surrounding area.
